Voluntary    Epithalame    Healey Willan (1880-1968)

James Healey Willan was an Anglo-Canadian organist and composer. He composed more than 800 works including operas, symphonies, chamber music, a concerto, and pieces for band, orchestra, organ, and piano. He is best known for his church music. The Three Kings is typical of Canadian Anglican composer Healey Willan’s straightforward, modal, lyrical style. For the first half of the anthem, a three-part men’s chorus – symbolically the three kings – is in dialogue with a three-part women’s chorus, representing the holy manger scene.

Processional Hymn 705    As those of old their first fruits brought    Forest Green

Sequence Hymn 686    Come, thou fount of every blessing    Nettleton

Offertory Anthem     Lass dich nur nichts nicht dauren    Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Text: Paul Flemming, 1609-1640

Lass dich nur nichts nicht
dauren mit Trauren;
Sei stille, wie Gott us fügt,
so sei vergnügt mein Wille.

Was willst du heute
sorgen auf Morgen,
der Eine steht allem für,
der gibt auch dir das Deine.

Sei nur in allem Handel,
ohn’ wandel, steh feste,
was Gott beschleußt,
das ist und heisst das Beste.  Amen.

Let nothing ever grieve thee,
distress thee, nor fret thee;
heed God’s good will, my soul,
be still, compose thee.

Why brood all day in sorrow?
Tomorrow will bring thee
God’s help benign
and grace sublime in mercy.

Be true in all endeavor,
and ever do bravely;
what God decrees brings joy and peace,
He’ll stay thee. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities,
and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Communion Hymn 64    O heavenly Word, eternal Light    O Heiland, reiss

Hymn in Procession 390    Praise to the Lord    Lobe den Herren

Voluntary    Voluntary on Lobe den Herren    Paul Manz (1919-2009)

Paul Manz was was an American composer for choir and organ, and a champion of hymn singing.  Manz was most famous for his celebrated hymn festivals. Instead of playing traditional organ recitals, Manz would generally lead a “festival” of hymns from the organ, in which he introduced each hymn with one of his famously creative organ improvisations based on the hymn tune in question. The congregation would then sing the hymn with his accompaniment.
