Worship ministries
Our worship life, both within and outside the walls of the church, are supported by the ministries of many dedicated people. The worship ministries that are active at St. John's Church are described below. If you would like additional information or might be interested in participating in one or more of these groups, please contact the parish office or the leader of the group, if indicated in the text below.
Altar Guild
The Altar Guild cares for the flowers, candles, tapestries, linens, brass and silver that decorate the church and are used in each service at St. John's Church. The Guild supports the clergy by preparing the altar and the elements (bread and wine) used in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
Lay Readers
The Lay Readers read the Old Testament and New Testament Epistle readings and the Prayers of the People during worship services. They are also licensed to serve at Eucharistic Ministers during the service, assisting the Priest in the distribution of Holy Communion. Beyond the walls of the church, Lay Readers lead a weekly Morning Prayer service each Sunday at a local health care facility.
Service Ushers
The Ushers for our worship services have many responsibilities, covering a broad spectrum of needs that might arise as we come together for corporate worship. Among the Usher's many duties, their ministry of hospitality is one of their primary roles: handing out worship service bulletins, providing assistance to those who might need a hand to get to their pew, or simply greeting folks with a smile to be sure that everyone is welcomed to St. John's Church. The ministry of serving as an Usher is a great way to meet new people and to assist in the many needs of corporate worship.
Acolytes
The Acolytes assist in worship services by leading processions with the cross and torches. Acolytes also assist in worship during the collection of alms, assisting the Priests with setting the altar with bread and wine for Holy Communion, and by helping out with other necessary worship activities, depending on the type of service that the congregation is celebrating. The ministry of serving as an Acolyte is a wonderful opportunity to participate in the central act of worship in the congregation.
